A Quarter of Us Would Rather Buy a New PC than Fix a Problem

Nearly a quarter of UK computer users would rather buy a new computer than fix a problem, a survey has shown.

The poll, conducted by Virgin Media, revealed that 63 per cent of us shout at the screen when programs freeze or crash, while 58 per cent of respondents admitted swearing at the computer. More than a quarter (27 per cent) admitted that they had gone so far as to hit their machines.

Having exhausted that line of attack, about a quarter will attempt to put the blame on a friend or family member, and as many as 22 per cent will end up admitting defeat and buying a new PC rather than trying more conventional methods of solving the problem.

The survey also revealed that women are far more likely to seek professional advice to solve computer problems than men, who will persevere on their own for longer, and invariably end up angry and frustrated more often.

Jon James, Virgin Media's executive director of broadband, said the results showed not only the public's continuing struggle to get to grips with modern technology, but also the lack of decent support.

“A lack of computer knowledge combined with a lack of easily accessed support is leading to massive consumer frustration,” James said. “Our research found evidence of customers so frustrated with fixing PC problems, they ended up buying a new PC when only a simple fix was needed.”

The survey was timed to coincide with the launch of Virgin Media's Digital Home Support Service, a UK-wide remote support network offering help with a wide range of computer problems.

IBM Launches Three New Blade Servers

IBM has unveiled three new blade servers to add to its server line-up for 2010.

The new servers are built on IBM’s own Power 7 architecture, released back in February, and claim to offer reduced workload times as well as shaving 25 per cent from, overheads.

The PS700 is an entry level server featuring just one blade and the four-core Power 7 chip, however, the rest of the line continues to grow in specs.

The PS701 single socket product offers an eight-core Power 7 chip and the PS702 features two of the eight-core processors.

Whilst its previous Power 6 chip was just dual-core and had a single-thread, this next-generation Power 7 scales from two to eight cores and can run up to four threads at once.

The new technology has led IBM to make bold claims that the last of these server models – the PS702 Express – offers 188 per cent better performance per blade than the HP Integrity BL860c Blade and a massive 225 per cent better performance per blade than the Oracle Sun Blade T6340.

UK pricing has yet to be confirmed.

Business Recovery Boosts PC Sales by 27 per Cent

PC shipments have taken off again, posting a 27.4 per cent jump in the first quarter off the back of business desktop refreshes.

Europe lead the recovery, with Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) posting 24.8 per cent growth and posting it's biggest volume of shipments on record for the first quarter.

While mobile consumer computers - laptops and netbooks - continued to lead the market, it was SMBs that helped drive recovery in the professional market, not larger enterprises. "However, the pipeline is positive with large tenders for major hardware refreshes coinciding with Windows 7 deployments," Gartner noted.

Mikako Kitagawa, principal analyst at Gartner, said: "These first quarter results indicate that the professional PC market is gradually picking up, driven by PC replacements in mature markets."

"With a relatively positive macroeconomic outlook, business demand was more forthcoming. Major PC replacement demand driven by Windows 7 will become more apparent in the second half of 2010 and the beginning of 2011," she added in a statement.

PC makers

HP held onto the top spot globally, but faced steady competition from Asian rivals, Gartner said, knocking its market share to 18.2 per cent from 19.3 per cent last year. Gartner said the PC-maker's "strength" would become clearer as the business market continues to recover.

Dell slid to third place with a 12.1 per cent market share, but still posted 20 per cent growth year-on-year, the first time it's done so in two years off the back of strong international sales.

Acer moved up to second place with 14.2 per cent share this quarter, up from 11.7 per cent this time last year. "Acer's business model allows it to meet price points that other vendors find difficult to match," Gartner said.

Apache Server Suffers Hack Attack

Hackers have attacked the Apache Software Foundation’s (ASF) project server and stolen the passwords of all its users.

The attack began on 5 April when hackers broke into Apache’s Atlassian JIRA software – used to track all its projects and any bugs that emerge.

They sent server admins a TinyURL link claiming they were having problems whilst browsing projects. When admins clicked on the link, it compromised their sessions and allowed the hackers to get hold of administrator rights.

By 9 April, the hackers had planted a password stealing programme and taken full control of JIRA, as well as Apache’s Confluence and Bugzilla programmes.

“If you are a user of the Apache hosted JIRA, Bugzilla, or Confluence, a hashed copy of your password has been compromised,” said a blog post from the Apache Infrastructure team.

It has warned users of any of these programs to change their passwords, especially if they logged in between 6-9 April.

It has also left those who had Atlassian accounts before July 2008 in danger as an old unencrypted database containing customer passwords was left online and could have been compromised.

“We made a big error,” admitted Mike Cannon-Brookes, chief executive of Atlassian, in a blog post. “For this we are, of course, extremely sorry.”

He added: “The legacy customer database, with passwords stored in plain text, was a liability. Even though it wasn't active, it should have been deleted. There's no logical explanation for why it wasn't, other than as we moved off one project, and on to the next one, we dropped the ball and screwed up.”

Apache is running JIRA on a proxy configuration for the meantime and has made a number of changes to make the server safer.

“We hope our disclosure has been as open as possible and true to the ASF spirit,” concluded the Apache blog. “Hopefully others can learn from our mistakes.”

Google: Consumer Tech Evolves Into Enterprise IT

Google isn't focusing on creating enterprise tech from scratch, preferring instead to rework existing consumer products.

For Google, enterprise IT evolves from the consumer side.

This was the message from Roger De'Ath, Google Enterprise account manager, who was explaining how the originally consumer focused web giant moved into the enterprise space in the first place.

"Google, everyone is aware, is trying to do this enormous project, which is organising all of the world's information and making it universally accessible, or making it accessible to everyone," he explained at a meeting yesterday in London.

"If we are serious about addressing all of the world's information, then we need to be serious about enterprise content, because a lot of the information in the world exists in enterprises," which is why Google Enterprise was founded, he explained.

"Google enterprise... is best thought of as almost Google's software division," De'Ath added.

De'Ath went on to explain that the consumerisation of IT is alive and well at Google. As more and more consumer products move into the business space, it's no surprise that one of the biggest consumer-focused firms is mimicking that route too.

"We're taking what Google's developing often initially in the consumer space, adding on a critical amount of extra functionality, which businesses require, and delivering it where it makes sense - but critically not throwing away the stuff that makes it successful in the consumer space, [such as] easy to use, fast, responsive, highly innovative in terms of quick turnover, and development of the products," he said.

Products like Google Apps have notably followed that route - created for consumers but reworked into enterprise products - but so has search.

"Actually the core of what we do in [the] Enterprise [division] has always been enterprise search," he said, adding 30,000 companies are using Google's enterprise search - in some form - around the world.

Microsoft, Adobe and Oracle Fix Critical Flaws

Microsoft, Adobe and Oracle have all issued important security updates as part of this month's Patch Tuesday.

Microsoft has issued 11 patches to fix 25 flaws across Windows, Office and Exchange as part of its monthly update cycle.

Of the 11 patches, five were rated critical, five were important, and the last was moderate.

Microsoft highlighted three - MS10-019, MS10-026, and MS10-027 - as being priorities for administrators. The first affects all versions of Windows and allows for code to be executed, while the latter pair could be triggered just by visiting a malicious web page.

Microsoft's security communications manager Jerry Bryant also warned that one of the patches is a Windows Kernel update, and therefore includes a system to check for rootkits, after the last kernel update uncovered a few infections.

"For MS10-021, and for all of our kernel updates going forward, we have included detection logic for unusual conditions or modifications to the Windows Kernel binaries," Bryant said.

"If such conditions are detected, the update will return an error to the user and fail to install," he said, adding that if that happens, admins should contact Microsoft support.

While three of the patches - including two critical ones - affect Windows 7, Bryant noted that the more recent operating systems were less likely to see security flaws and need updating than their older counterparts.

"We continue to encourage customers to upgrade to the latest operating systems to benefit from the increased security protections provided by these platforms," Bryant wrote in the Microsoft security blog.

Microsoft also updated its Malicous Software Removal Tool and closed two advisories relating to VBScript and Server Message Block, saying no attacks seemed to be taking advantage of the vulnerabilities.

Microsoft also stopped supporting the Windows Vista RTM yesterday, so users should in the very least update to SP1.

Adobe and Oracle updates

Adobe also issued 15 critical updates for Reader and Acrobat, and rolled out its new automatic updater, which will see future updates installed on users' computers within 72 hours of their release.

Oracle also unleashed its quarterly update, issuing 47 fixes including 16 for Sun following its acquisition of the firm.

Public Sector CIOs Call for More Government IT Ambition

A large majority of public sector chief information officers (CIOs) want the next Government to be more ambitious when it comes to IT, according to a new survey.

The research, conducted by SAP, showed 43 per cent of respondents thought current Government IT strategies were not ambitious enough and 71 per cent wanted the Government to be more ambitious to help their organisations meet their goals into the future.

The top priority for the CIOs is to gain more strategic guidance from the next Government when it comes to IT. Half of respondents also felt a key focus for the short term would be reducing complexity in the IT systems, with a third wanting to reduce energy and power costs.

Although 45 per cent said the lack of both human and technological resources stood in the way of achieving goals, 38 per cent were positive that more could been done with less if processes were streamlined and new technologies were embraced.

"It’s good to see that public sector IT directors are optimistic about achieving change,” said Simon Godfrey, director of business development and government relations at SAP UK and Ireland, in a statement.

“However, many are finding themselves in a catch-22 situation; they are faced with an increasingly demanding and tech savvy public but at the same time have decreasing IT resources and investment. The challenge is working out how they can achieve more with less.”

When it comes to the types of technologies to use, 19 per cent of respondents thought cloud computing should be a top priority, with a third believing open source solutions would help to take full advantage of cheaper technologies.

However, 44 per cent felt the proposed Government app store was a long way off becoming a reality.

“The message to the incoming government is loud and clear: ICT needs to be closer aligned to organisational needs," Godfrey added.

“There needs to be more guidance on how to do more with less and a faster move to simplified and shared services that reduce complexity and drive efficiencies for the public.”

The report arrives the day after the Conservative Party said it would freeze spending on all major public sector IT projects, as part of its manifesto pledges.

Twitter Hits 100 Million Users, Says 'Money is Important'

Twitter has detailed its new money-making plans, saying raising revenue was its primary goal as the site passed 100 million users.

Twitter hopes to snag hundreds of millions more users in coming years by making the service easier, integrating Twitter directly into web sites and focusing more on customising the service for mobile devices.

At the company's first conference for Twitter developers, chief executive Evan Williams said generating revenue was among the key priorities going forward - a change of tone for a firm that had previously said it focused mainly on improving the user experience.

The comments come a day after Twitter rolled out a new advertising program dubbed "Promoted Tweets," its first attempt to make money from its service and a milestone on the path toward an initial public offering.

"Money is important," Williams said during a special talk at the event devoted to monetisation. "It takes a hell of a lot of money to run Twitter. There has to be a very solid revenue stream underneath this to fuel it."

But co-founder Biz Stone stressed that while the company was not philosophically opposed to floating shares to the public, he stressed that a public offering was not on the radar for the time being.

"At this point we have 175 people and we just yesterday announced our revenue strategy. We're not talking about an IPO," Stone told Reuters at the event, which was attended by about 1,000 people.

While the fledgling advertising program unveiled this week now has just five advertisers in a trial run, Stone said in an interview that the company believed the new ad service represented one of the primary businesses that would finance the company's operations going forward.

"We are pretty confident that this is going to work out to be a profitable, sustainable, real business for us," Stone said in an interview on the sidelines of the event, which saw Black-Eyed Peas front man will.i.am interviewed about his Twitter views.

Commercial goals

Twitter executive Dick Costolo also cited commercial accounts, which Twitter is currently testing with a couple hundred companies, as the second main money making pillar.

Twitter, which allows users to send short, 140-character text messages, or Tweets, to groups of so-called followers, is one of the web's most popular social networking services, along with Facebook and LinkedIn. The social networking services are increasingly challenging established web players, like Google, Microsoft and Yahoo, by competing for users' time online and for advertising spend.

Twitter has roughly 105 million registered users and is adding 300,000 new users every day, the company announced at the event, providing official data about usage of the service for the first time.

Executives also said that 75 per cent of its traffic comes from people using specialised applications created by private companies, rather than people visiting the Twitter.com site.

Still, Twitter said its site drew 180 million monthly unique visitors on its site in March, suggesting that Twitter may be more popular than previously believed. According to comScore, Twitter had 69.5 million unique visitors to its site in February.

Going forward, executives said that the company planned to increasingly target users on mobile phones.

Last week, the company acquired a one-person company that produced a Twitter app for Apple's iPhone, which will be reincarnated as Twitter's iPhone app in the coming weeks.

The company also worked with Blackberry maker Research in Motion to develop a specialised Blackberry app. Williams told the crowd that an app for phones based on Google's Android software was in the works.

Twitter sought to reassure independent software developers at the conference that the company's moves to add its own home-grown features and versions of the service would not shut out the more than 100,000 third-party programs that have been built to work alongside and enhance Twitter.

"Twitter is truly a collaboration and that is not changing," said Williams.

But Stone said Twitter would continue to fill in holes it sees in the main product by developing new features and acquiring companies.

"I anticipate a few more" acquisitions this year, Stone said. "I don't know if we're going too crazy. But there's certain things that we need to get done and we want to get done fast, and there's certain things we can take our time building."

MoD Loses Data Over 1,500 Times in Five Years

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has admitted to losing data more than 1,500 times in the past five years.

Bill Rammell, Minister for the Armed Forces, unveiled the truth during a debate on the final day of parliament last week, confessing there had been 1,705 separate incidents of data loss in the department between 2005 and 2009.

Rammell divulged that 2008 was the worst year of the five, with 1,099 incidents occurring, whilst the next largest only came in at 347 during 2009.

There have already been 71 incidents recorded in January and February this year.

“The surge in reported incidents from 2008 is largely attributable to two factors,” claimed Rammell. “Firstly, there is an increased awareness of the need to report data loss across the department.”

He added: “Secondly, since the publication of the Data Handling Review and Burton Report, the MoD is now auditing its holdings of both personal data and removable media. This has identified a number of instances where the location of data could not be verified and has therefore been reported as a possible loss-even though in many cases they may have merely been unaccounted for or incorrectly disposed of.”

Although the MoD has been upfront about the numbers, the particulars of each data loss are still unclear.

Chris McIntosh, chief executive of data encryption company Stonewood, said in a statement: "While this answer demonstrates that there have been a large number of data losses, it does not tell us anything about the severity and consequences involved, which are undoubtedly of much more importance.”

He added: “If data is correctly encrypted and necessary precautions are taken, then a data loss, while unfortunate, should not prove an immediate threat to serving personnel or operational success. On the other hand, if unsecured data is lost, then the consequences can be grave.”

Yet Rammell defended the MoD’s processes and concluded: “The Ministry of Defence takes any attacks on, or misuse of, its information, networks and associated media storage devices very seriously and has robust procedures in place to mitigate against and investigate such occurrences.”

“Furthermore, new processes, instructions and technological aids are continually being implemented to mitigate human errors and raise the awareness of every individual in the Department with regards to cyber security.”

Apple iPad's UK Arrival Delayed until May

Apple has delayed the international launch of the iPad until the end of May, in order to meet US demand for the tablet computer, as Vodafone, Orange and O2 announced they will be offering 'price plans' for the device in the UK.

In a short note on its website, Apple claimed it has delivered half a million iPads since it became available at the beginning of the month, saying "demand is far higher than we predicted and will likely continue to exceed our supply over the next several weeks as more people see and touch an iPad."

"Faced with this surprisingly strong US demand, we have made the difficult decision to postpone the international launch of iPad by one month, until the end of May," the statement added.

Apple said it would start taking international pre-orders and announce pricing on 10 May.

The international launch was supposed to coincide with the arrival of the 3G model of the iPad in April, but Apple noted it had a "large number of pre-orders" for that edition as well.

Thought the Californian firm didn't offer an apology, Apple did hope that its own sales success would cheer eager buyers. "We know that many international customers waiting to buy an iPad will be disappointed by this news, but we hope they will be pleased to learn the reason — the iPad is a runaway success in the US thus far."

Meanwhile, Vodafone said it will "offer dedicated iPad price plans for all models from the end of May in Australia, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK."

Vodafone's spokespeople weren't discussing exactly what those price plans were for, but one said "there will be plans to accompany all models of the 3G version."

In near identical wording, its rival said: "O2 today announced that it will offer dedicated iPad price plans for all models from the end of May in the UK."

Orange also confirmed it would offer a iPad price plans.

Your Online Tax-Paying Options

Consumers are increasingly comfortable with online bill paying. So it's no surprise that Uncle Sam also wants to cash in on electronic money moving.

Leading the way is the federal agency that has the most direct contact with working Americans: the Internal Revenue Service. Last year, almost 95 million taxpayers filed electronically, many because they were due refunds that were processed more quickly because their tax data were sent online.

Now the IRS is working to convince taxpayers that they, too, should go the electronic route when it comes to paying up. The agency has entered into partnerships with the private sector, including the banking industry, tax software developers and credit card processors, to make tax e-payments more appealing.

Here are the ways you can electronically move your money into the U.S. Treasury.

Electronic funds withdrawal

Individuals who file via computer, either on their own or with the help of a paid preparer, can use electronic funds withdrawal, or EFW. This basically is the reverse of the direct deposit that the IRS recommends for those getting refunds.

When you get to the end of your computer tax-filing chores and find you owe, EFW will be one of your payment choices. Have your checkbook handy -- not to write a check, but to enter some account numbers that the IRS wants. You'll be asked for your personal account number, what type of account it is (savings or checking), and the financial institution's routing number.

If you don't know which set of numerals is the routing number, check with your bank before you e-file -- especially if you're planning to file (and pay) late on the April deadline day. At 11:50 p.m., there won't be anyone at the bank branch to answer your call for help.

In most instances, electronic funds withdrawal is free. But when you call about the routing number, it wouldn't hurt to confirm that your bank or credit union does indeed allow such transfers at no cost.

One nice thing about EFW is that you can decide exactly when your tax payment comes out of your bank account by scheduling the payment -- as long as it's by the April due date. That means you can get the filing paperwork out of the way early and hold on to your cash until the last minute.

Credit card payments

Taxpayers can, of course, still tell Uncle Sam to "charge it." And debit cards are part of the mix.

Official Payments and Link2Gov remain the two IRS-approved plastic processors. Both companies accept payments from electronic as well as paper filers, either via phone or the Internet, in Spanish as well as English.

American Express, Discover, MasterCard or Visa are accepted for charged payments. If you want to avoid potentially costly interest charges, the payment processors also accept some debit or check card payments.

Although the companies are now accepting debit as well as credit cards, not all cards are accepted for all payment types. The cards that are accepted will be identified when you make your payment.

Also keep in mind that this electronic payment method will cost you more than just your tax bill. Each company has its own fee schedule, with fees starting at 2.35 percent of your tax bill.

And if you don't pay off your credit card in full, you'll start racking up interest charges on your account.

Your tax payment and the convenience fee usually will appear separately on your card statement. If you itemize, note the fee amount. The IRS now allows you to count that as a miscellaneous deduction, so you can add this payment to those expenses when you file your 2010 return next year.

Electronic Federal Tax Payment System

You can avoid credit card vendor fees by using the federal Electronic Federal Tax Payment System, known as EFTPS. Businesses have been using EFTPS for years to directly transfer various taxes to the IRS. Now the agency is stepping up efforts to get individual taxpayers to use the system.

EFTPS is a free service and is available year-round. Individual taxpayers can make use of EFTPS to pay taxes associated with more than two dozen tax forms, including the family of 1040 forms (estimated and amended returns, too).

You must, however, enroll and get a personal identification number and password before you can use the service. It's a two-step process that involves a confirmation sent through the postal service, so don't wait until the last minute if this e-payment option appeals to you. And, again, check with your bank to see if it charges a transfer fee.

As with electronic funds transfers, EFTPS users can make payments 24 hours a day, seven days a week and schedule payments in advance. The online system also let taxpayers review their last 16 months of tax-payment history and search, print or download the data by date, tax type, amount, tax form and other factors.

In addition to paying an annual tax bill, filers who pay quarterly estimated taxes also can use these e-payment methods.

For more information on electronic tax options, check out the Bankrate feature "The many ways to electronically file your return" on ways you can e-file and "Getting the most from tax software" on selecting tax software with which you can electronically file your return and pay any tax due.

Adobe unveils Creative Suite 5

Adobe has unveiled Creative Suite 5, upgrading its design and development software such as Photoshop, Premiere and more with some intriguing new features.

The entire lineup has 250 new features, Adobe said. Flagship editing software Photoshop leads the way with a clever new tool dubbed Content Aware fill, which makes cutting a bit out of a photo and filling it in with background a quick automated job.

Photoshop CS5 also features a new tool called Refine Edge, which finds the edge of an element of an image, to make masking easier, while InDesign CS5 promises better e-reader support for documents.

In addition, Photoshop, Premiere Pro and After Effects now also run natively in 64-bit Mac or Windows.

The suite includes a new system called Adobe Flash Catalyst, which the firm says will let designers create content without coding, and "improve the collaborative process between designer and developer."

Aside from the software updates, the CS5 lineup will also offer access to the new CS Live set up, which includes Omniture web tracking, integrating marketing and optimisation tools from the firm Adobe bought last September for $1.8 billion.

“While Creative Suite 5 continues Adobe’s storied history of delivering astonishing new creative features, this release first and foremost addresses the challenges facing publishers and creatives worldwide - how to build profitable businesses around digital content,” said Shantanu Narayen, president and chief executive officer at Adobe.

“By coupling sophisticated online business analytics with dazzling creative tools, we’re ensuring that publishers, designers and marketers can create, deliver and optimise beautiful, high-impact digital experiences across media and devices,” Narayen added in a statement.

The entire package can be picked up in the CS5 Master Collection for an expected cost in the UK of £2,303 excluding VAT, although upgrade pricing and smaller packages with select programmes are also available. CS5 will ship in 30 days.

Saab Offers Car Discounts After GM Sale

With General Motor's sale of Sweden's Saab Automobile AB to the Netherlands' niche sports carmaker Spyker Cars N.V. completed, the new owners slashed prices for Saab's 2010 models and disclosed some future product ideas for the brand.

The 2010 Saab 9-3 Sport Sedan now starts at $29,725, while the 9-3 SportCombi wagon starts at $31,155. The 9-3 Convertible starts at $40,815, while the 9-3X, an all-wheel-drive crossover utility vehicle, starts at $37,800. The prices represent car discounts of 4 percent to 12 percent, depending on the model, and put all the cars more in line with Saab's competitors.

While the price cuts are for 2010 models, Saab also is offering incentives through March 31, ranging from $4,000 to $8,000 for buyers of 2009 models. There's an additional $1,000 incentive on new 2009 or 2010 models for current owners or lessees. Production of Saabs had slowed in recent months as the brand's future hung in the balance, but new owner Spyker says it has been restarted and new cars will start flowing into dealers this month.

Saab's new owner also outlined product plans for the brand, which include expanding the lineup with several more models. The first car will be the redesigned 9-5 Sedan, which will arrive in showrooms this summer. The all-wheel-drive sedan will feature a parking-assist system that senses objects in all directions as well as a heads-up display that puts key information, such as speed, in the driver's line of sight versus glancing down at the dashboard. In addition, the 9-4X, a crossover that will be larger than the 9-3X, is slated to arrive in 2011, while a redesigned 9-3 is scheduled for 2012.

The newly formed Saab Spyker Automobiles N.V. has production and intellectual property-sharing agreements with General Motors for the redesigned 9-5, the new 9-4X and the redesigned 9-3, but it is already talking about technology sharing with other automakers, including "some German brands," says CEO Victor Muller. Future agreements could involve sharing engines, components or entire vehicle platforms (the chassis, suspension and other key components on the underside of the body). Because the development of the redesigned 9-5 and the new 9-4X are so far along, the earliest there would be any technology-sharing partnerships beyond GM would be on the 2012 Saab 9-3.

Saab, whose sales declined 58 percent worldwide last year due to an aging product line and the uncertainty of the company's future, aims to recapture buyers who left the brand, often for Audi and BMW. In addition to the three cars currently in development, Saab wants to add a small car to its product line to compete with the Audi A3 and BMW 1 Series as well as hybrid vehicles. The company projects it will be profitable again within two years, when it expects to sell 120,000 cars annually.
