Susan Boyle Loses on British Talent TV Show

She is an internationally acclaimed Internet phenomenon and a symbol of the folly of underestimating people because of the way they look. But in a shocking upset, Susan Boyle, the 47-year-old Scottish church volunteer whose stunning audition for the “Britain’s Got Talent” TV show last month has been viewed something like 90 million times on YouTube, lost in the final round of the program on Saturday night.

After the audience votes had been tallied, Ms. Boyle placed second, beaten by a joyfully innovative dance troupe named Diversity.

Winners of “Britain’s Got Talent,” one of a host of talent shows that are among the most-watched programs in Britain, receive about $160,000 and a spot on the roster of the Royal Variety Performance, presented in front of the Queen. Their high profiles also virtually assure that they will have lucrative careers in show business.

But the same is often true for the runners-up, who in this case included Julian Smith, a soulful saxophonist who was a darling of the studio audience and came in third. And the exposure Ms. Boyle has received since her original audition, culminating in an appearance on “Oprah” in the United States, means she is a hot property who is virtually guaranteed a recording contract.

For weeks she seemed to be a shoo-in for victory. To see a middle-aged woman from a small town — who lives alone with her cat, Pebbles, and seemed at first to be almost comically awkward — open her mouth to reveal such a beautiful voice was revelatory and inspiring. Celebrities like Demi Moore said she they were rooting for her.

But in recent days there were worries that Ms. Boyle — who is said to have suffered slight brain damage when she was deprived of oxygen at birth, and is so unworldly that she has no computer — was cracking under all the pressure. Various tabloid reports had her paralyzed with nerves, lashing out at reporters and swearing uncharitably about her competitors. She was said to be a packed suitcase away from quitting the competition and going back home, to the town of Blackburn in Scotland.

Piers Morgan, one of the judges, described her in his blog as “a frightened rabbit caught in the headlights.”

But in the end Ms. Boyle proved stoic in defeat, graciously congratulating her opponents.

As popular as it is, the show has also come been criticized for the way it so cruelly raises contestants’ hopes and then smashes them. Several performers who made the semifinals, and were then rudely dismissed by Simon Cowell, one of the judges, and voted unceremoniously off, began weeping with disappointment.

“This show is all about manipulating the eagerness for celebrity among vulnerable, often desperate people,” David Wilson, a professor at Birmingham City University who briefly worked as a psychologist on “Big Brother” several years ago, wrote in The Daily Mail. “The more tears, humiliation, conflict and embarrassment, the more the public loves it.”

A Brief History of Lumajang

In Java, there are two ancient cities which still exist until now, they are Lamajang (today, it is Lumajang) and Tuban. For the city which celebrated its 742nd anniversary lately, it has a long historical chronology. Since there are many accurate proofs about the historical background found, experts began to debate with each other as to decide the exact anniversary date. Finally, they made a decision based on historical writing 'Prasasti Malurung' dated 1177 Saka (December 15, 1255). The day was established to be the birthday of Lumajang.

In order to reveal the glory of the ancient times, there are some references taken, the book "Sejarah Pemerintahan Lumajang" or some writings by history observers. To reflect the historical path of the city, the followings are some parts of the historical plot.

When the King of Majapahit, Sri Rajasanegara Dyah Hayam Wuruk went through an official trip to visit Lumajang in 1359 AD accompanied by the "Kingdom Public Relation Manager" Empu Prapanca, Lumajang has became a state reigned by an emperor. According to the historical source "Prasasti Malurung" dated 1177 Saka, "Lumajang State" was reigned by King Nararyya Kirana Sminingrat from Kediri- the name was adopted for the name of a hospital in Lumajang- Swadana Hospital (RSUS-Rumah Sakit Umum Swadana).

The Saka date which is exactly on December 15, 1255, is declared as the Birthday of Lumajang, based on the result of the Seminar held on the period of the regent, HM Samsi Ridwan, which is kept until now. Now, Lumajang is 742 years old.

It is important to be noted that before the history of Indonesia was recorded in a written form (pre-historical era) the area of Lumajang had been inhibited by people with the belief of Megalithicum, leaving artifacts such as menhir and 'punden berundak'. Menhir is a log of stone held straight as a memorial to the ancestors found in the district of Senduro, Gucialit, Sukodono, Klakah and Lumajang. The one which is the most interesting is the Menhir in Kandangan village within the district of Senduro, that is in the digging site Wadungprabu and Tejakusuma. In the place where people held a harvest ceremony, there lies 'batu berundak' as a place where they proceed a ritual ceremony associated with the cropping period and the worshipping of the ancestors' spirit in Neolithic era. From those findings which are recorded in the book "Sejarah Pemerintahan Lumajang"- we can assume that Lumajang is and ancient habitation which had already existed before the reign of Majaapahit and Kediri. Besides the ancient sources, there are many other written 'prasasti' found in Lumajang. The oldest ancient archives ever found is in ranu Gumbolo, on the foot of Mount Semeru. The 'prasasti' dated 1182 tells about King Kameswara's expedition from Kadiri to Mount Semeru.

The more recent "prasasti", weighed 300 kg is located in Kertosari village, Senduro District. The 'prasasti' having a Chronogram saying "Kaya bhumi Sasiku" is dated 1112 Saka or 1191 in the year of our Father. The earlier "Prasasti" dated 1297 Saka (1375 AD) was written about sixteen years after the tour of Hayam Wuruk to Lumajang in 1281 Saka (1359 AD). However, "Prasasti Mungir" in Pasrujambe Village, in the district of Senduro, is written in the earliest year, dated 1381 S (1459 AD) telling about the expedition of Osing people to Pasrujambe.

In Summary, from all of the ancient remnants which reveal the history of Lumajang, the remnants from the Majapahit period are the most dominant in number, starting from the site Biting (in Kutorenon-Sukodono), Agung Temple in Randuagung, and Gedongputri Temple (in Candipuro). Now, we can only witness the ruin of those buildings.

Raden Wijaya, the first Majapahit Emperor, Aria Wiraraja, dan Nambi were the conqueror who had led Lumajang once in the period of Majapahit. That was why the book of Pararaton and Negara Kertagama which talked about the history of Singosari and Majapahit, mentioned the name of Lumajang several times.

It is mentioned in the 17th 'Pupuh' and 7th 'Saloka' about Hayam Wuruk's trip to Lumajang in 1359. However, the word Lumajang was then 'Lamajang'. The transformation of the name is mentioned in 'Prasasti Mula Malurung' (1225 AD) and some other books. Eventually, the experts agree that December 15, 1225 is the date of Lumajang anniversary, based on the Saka year.

These are the brief description of Lumajang history, from there a new government of Lumajang was estaablished. Periodically, Lumajang was ruled by 11 regents already. The first regent, KRT Kertodirejo (1920-1941), replaced by R Abu Bakar (1941-1948), R. Sastrodikoro (1948-1959), R. Soekarjono (1959-1966), Ng. Soebowo (1960-1973), Soewandi (1973-1983), Karsid(1983-1988), HM Samsi Ridwan (1988-1993), H. Tarmin Hariadi (1993-1998), Drs. H. Achmad Fauzi (1998-2008), and from then on, the regent is Dr. H. Syahrazad Masdar, MA.

New Version of Female Condom Touted

NEW YORK - Advocates of the female condom are promoting a less costly, more user-friendly version that they hope will vastly expand its role in the global fight against AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases.

An early version of the female condom was introduced in 1993, and it remains the only available woman-initiated form of protection against both STDs and unintended pregnancy. Yet despite global promotion by the United Nations and other organizations, its usage is still minuscule, even as women bear an ever-growing share of the AIDS epidemic.

Advocates hope the dynamics will change following last month's approval by the Food and Drug Administration of the FC2, a new version of the female condom produced by the Chicago-based Female Health Co.

About 35 million female condoms were distributed worldwide last year, but that compares to more than 10 billion male condoms, which are far cheaper and, at least initially, easier to use. However, in some nations with high HIV rates, many men refuse to wear condoms, putting women at risk.

Though it looks similar to its predecessor — a soft, transparent sheath with flexible inner and outer rings — the FC2 is made from synthetic rubber rather than polyurethane, making it cheaper to produce.

Mary Ann Leeper, former president of Female Health Co. and now its strategic adviser, said the FC2 also is less noisy during use. Complaints about squeaky noises were among the factors that slowed acceptance of the original version.

Barcelona Wins European Title

ROME (AP) - Barcelona gave an emphatic answer to who is the best soccer team in Europe, dispatching Manchester United with a dazzling and dominating display to win the Champions League title for the second time in four seasons.

Samuel Eto’o scored 10 minutes in and Lionel Messi connected in the 70th, leading the Spanish champions to a one-sided 2-0 victory Wednesday night that prevented the English power from becoming the first team in 19 years to win consecutive European titles.

“This is the most important victory of my life,” Messi said. “When the second goal came, that calmed us down a lot.”

Eto’o took a pass from Andres Iniesta, cut around defender Nemanja Vidic and beat Edwin van der Sar from 8 yards. The goalkeeper got a touch on the right-footed shot but couldn’t keep it from going in at the near post.

“The victory is much more important than the goal,” said Eto’o, a three-time African player of the year from Cameroon.

Messi, a 21-year-old star of Argentina’s national team, easily won the glamour duel with reigning FIFA player of the year Cristiano Ronaldo. Messi, who is 5-foot-7, was wide open when he scored on a header from about 6 yards off a cross from Xavi Hernandez, who had hit a post with a free kick 17 minutes earlier. It was Messi’s tournament-high ninth goal and his first in 11 games against English opponents.

Messi set off colorful celebrations at one end of Stadio Olimpico, filled with 62,467 fans, and left English supporters in silence as Manchester United’s European unbeaten streak ended at 25 games.

In Rome, Barcelona supporters splashed, fully clothed, in the Trevi Fountain. Before the match, a Manchester United fan was hospitalized after sustaining a stab wound and 15 people, including United and Barcelona fans, were arrested in separate incidents.

“Lionel Messi is the best player in the world, absolutely,” Barca coach Pep
Guardiola said of the Argentine, who scored 38 of Barcelona’s 153 goals this season. “I think right now he is adding his name to the Golden Ball.”

Ronaldo had United’s only two on-target shots and six overall. Wayne Rooney managed just one shot.

“This is one of the biggest disappointments of my career,” Ronaldo said. “The game was between Manchester and Barcelona. It wasn’t a duel between anyone in particular.”

Ronaldo said he didn’t know whether he would remain with Manchester United, where he has three seasons left on his contract. Real Madrid is thought to be interested in landing the 24-year-old.

Manchester United, which won its third straight Premier League title and added the English League Cup and Club World Cup, was trying to become the first team to win consecutive European crowns since AC Milan in 1989-90. The Red Devils also won the tournament in 1968 and 1999.

In its first season under Guardiola, a former Barcelona star who began as a ball boy at Camp Nou, the Catalan power won Europe’s top club competition for the third time following victories in 1992 and 2006.

“When I won as a player I was young and it was magnificent,” said Girardiola, who played for Barcelona’s 1992 team. “But now winning the treble at the first attempt is marvelous.”

Barcelona also swept Spain’s La Liga and Copa del Rey. After the victory, fans in the Spanish city honked horns and set off flares.

“I’ve been waiting for so long to get this title,” said Barcelona forward Thierry Henry, who played for the Arsenal team that lost to Barcelona in the 2006 final. “The last five minutes were the longest of my life.”

United manager Alex Ferguson was trying to match the record of Liverpool’s Bob Paisley, who coached three teams to European titles.

“We started the game brightly. We were confident and we could have been in front,” Ferguson said. “They were two shoddy goals. We didn’t play as well as we can, but they are a good team.”

United defender Rio Ferdinand, and Henry and Iniesta all started after overcoming injuries.

South Korean winger Park Ji-sung became the first Asian to appear in a Champions League final and almost scored in the opening minute, but his shot was deflected wide after Ronaldo’s free kick was blocked by goalkeeper Victor Valdes.

Trying to beef up the attack, Ferguson brought on Carlos Tevez for midfielder Anderson at the start of the second half, then added Dimitar Berbatov for Park in the 66th. Ferguson’s final move was to insert Paul Scholes for Ryan Giggs in the 75th.

“Barcelona controlled the game and deserved to win,” Ronaldo said. “I’m sure I’m going to play more finals.”

Choosing a Home Loan

After making the big decision to buy, the next question is "Where do I start?" The process of choosing a loan and a lender can be quite complicated but if you tackle it in stages you can avoid disappointment, frustration and wasted time.

There is no substitute for doing your homework. A good place to start your search is with our list of home loan lenders. Many lenders are online and have their own web sites and freecall telephone lines. There are also other web sites which are independent and will help you choose the loan that suits your requirements.

In choosing a loan that's right for you you should consider:

* Your needs,
* The associated costs, and
* The loan features.

Your needs

What you want the loan to do is the most important consideration. Do you want to make the minimum payments only? Do you want to be able to make extra payments? Do you want to be able to extend the loan later when your family grows or you need finance for special purchases such as a car? Do you want a credit card attached to the loan? These are some of the things you must think of before you start asking questions of different lenders.

What is the loan for?

If you are going to live in the property you need a home loan. If you are borrowing to purchase an investment property you need a residential investment loan. Some lenders offer separate products such as interest only repayments for investors but increasingly the products are losing their differentiation. Investing in real estate is discussed in Investing .

How long do I want the loan for?

If you can afford to pay more than the minimum monthly repayments you can save a considerable amount of interest. The faster you can repay the less interest you will pay. However if you are too ambitious and choose a loan period that is too short you may get into trouble if you have an unforeseen expense or suffer a loss of income. To avoid this, consider choosing a loan that lets you make additional repayments which has the effect of reducing the period of the loan and the amount of interest paid.

Should I choose a fixed or variable rate?

This calls for a certain amount of ‘crystal ball gazing'! Even the most experienced financiers and professionals have trouble predicting home loan interest rate trends and may get it wrong! Should you lock into a fixed home loan interest rate in case the rates go up again or ride out any changes that may occur?

In a variable interest rate loan you are subject to market forces. When the rate goes up so does your mortgage repayment. Conversely, when the rate goes down so does your payment but if you can keep the repayment at the previous level you will be helping reduce the interest portion.

In a fixed interest loan the rate will not change during the fixed period. When the interest rates rise you will be better off than those with a variable rate. Conversely, when rates fall you will still be repaying a higher interest rate.

Other choices offered by the lenders include a combination loan (fixed and variable terms), capped (the rate cannot rise beyond a certain rate), collared (sets an upper and lower interest rate) and interest only.

The associated costs

Many lenders offer similar products so one method of comparison is to compare the costs associated with the loan.

The main cost associated with the loan is the interest rate. There may also be a loan application fee and ongoing fees.

You may have to pay an application fee (but some lenders have special offers when the fee is waived) and ongoing fees if the product has them. There are many other fees which may or may not apply to your particular situation. Here are a few
  • Additional repayments fee - a fee when you make an additional payment (on fixed rate loan this can be significant).
  • Break cost - a fee charged when you exit a fixed interest rate before the end of the fixed period (varies according to the lender).
  • Combination loan fee - a fee for having part of your loan at a fixed rate and the rest at a variable rate.
  • Deferred establishment fee - the establishment fee is charged only if you exit the loan early on in the loan period (perhaps 3 to 5 years).
  • Exit fees - a number of fees charged when you pay off or exit a loan.
  • Late payment fee - a penalty flat fee or a higher interest rate charge on the balance of the loan if you fall behind with your payments.
  • Mortgage discharge fee - a fee to transfer ownership of the property to the borrower when you pay out your mortgage. There will also be state government transfer fees.
  • Ongoing fees - a fee for having a mortgage.
  • Portability fee - a fee for moving your loan over to a new property when you move.
  • Redraw fee - a fee for making a redraw.
  • Refix fee - a fee for refixing a loan at the end of the fixed term.
  • Switch to fixed fee - a fee for switching from a variable rate loan to a fixed rate loan.

The loan features

It is important to choose a loan that suits your needs so that you aren’t paying for features you can’t use. The flexibility of the loan is also important as your personal and financial circumstances may change in the period of the loan.

Putting a value on loan features and flexibility is not easy so the best way to compare the various products is to draw up a list of all the features you want and the associated charges to find your ideal loan.

Points you should consider are:
  • Additional repayments - can result in significant savings in interest.
  • Portability - so you can keep your loan when you purchase another property. This may involve a fee but it will be considerably less than the cost of establishing a new loan.
  • Ability to switch to a fixed rate - when interest rates rise. Some lenders charge a fee or make you pay out the loan and establish a new one.
  • Redraw - so you can access the amount you are in advance on your mortgage. Some lenders charge a fee for this after a certain number of withdrawals.
  • Refix - lets you lock into another fixed rate at the end of the fixed rate period. Some lenders charge a fee for this.

Remember that choosing a home loan is probably the biggest financial decision you will make so gather your information, analyse it thoroughly and don’t be afraid to ask questions. The right choice may save you thousands of dollars in the end.

Pixar's Small Wonder

With Up, the studio once again shows how little things can make a very big movie. There's a brief scene in the back half of Pixar's Up in which 8-year-old Russell recalls how, years before, his estranged father used to take him out for ice cream. Butter Brickle was Dad's favorite flavor, Russell's was chocolate, and the pair would sit together, slurping their melting treats and counting passing red and blue cars. "That might sound boring," says Russell, pink-cheeked with embarrassment. "But I think the boring stuff is the stuff I remember most."

If anything sums Pixar's modus operandi, it's loving the boring stuff. Finding salvation rather than the Devil in the details is one of the main reasons for the studio's artistic (53 combined Oscar nominations and wins) and commercial (nearly $5 billion in worldwide box-office gross) successes. Up, the studio's 10th full-length film, clocks in at a zippy 86 minutes and, like the nine before it, will rise or fall on the strength of its smallest moments.

Still, for a film of small, finely observed scenes, the hype surrounding Up is supersized. It was the first animated film ever to open the Cannes Film Festival, and dangles from its own balloon fleet of big ambitions, a big budget and big expectations. Up also marks Pixar's first foray in the currently hot market of 3-D films, and has the added pressure of following Oscar-winning Wall-E, which pulled in more than half a billion dollars worldwide.

There's external pressure, too: The business press has tarred the film for featuring an unsexy, arthritic hero, one they branded a difficult sell in subsidiary markets like those for Happy Meal toys or games.

And Up has been charged with the daunting task of hauling Disney out of a slump by those same analysts. A banner year for box-office revenues (up 14 percent) has generally bypassed the studio, which reported a 97 percent tumble in film profit for the quarter ending March 28.
Quantcast

Is the answer Carl Frederickson, Up's old-timer hero and the Disney-family antithesis of the studio's current megaplex stable, the blow-dried Jonas Brothers and teen queen Miley Cyrus? Yes, in part because of the inspiration the film draws from The Wizard of Oz (obvious flying-house parallels) and, according to Pixar, 1941's Dumbo. Up's Technicolor purity and deliberately unrealistic animation is a throwback to those early Dumbo days, the studio says, when you could populate a simple adventure movie with caricatured heroes and have it be as powerful (and lucrative) as a realistic film. Joe Grant, the legendary Disney character designer who drew the classic elephant and to whom Up is dedicated, was a posthumous influence on Carl's character and environs: "We went to [Grant's] house, and there were even trails where someone had walked the path for 40 years," remembers Jonas Rivera, an Up producer who started at the studio as an intern in its Toy Story phase. "It was really inspiring to us, the patina and weight of age on that house."

Like Wall-E, Up is a crazy-quilt of minutiae, almost by necessity, as its plot is Pixar's simplest. It starts with Michael Giacchino's soaring, layered score, recalling equally a sweeping pas de deux, Xavier Cugat's '30s-in-Havana rhythms and the swashbuckling brass of vintage Disney adventure. And there are plot nods to those 1960s Disney films: As Russell attempts to hold hostage a jungle bird, he snares her with outstretched sweets à la The Swiss Family Robinson. There's even a visual reprisal of a few favorite Pixar characters, including a wink at Toy Story's Mr. Potato Head via a construction worker.

Remarkably, the expectations haven't changed Pixar's wonky, director-driven focus on the teeny-tiny. "[I'd] walk into the story room and hear a half-hour argument about how Carl might sit down in a chair, or where his phone would go," Rivera says. "What we're trying to do is not just argue about the details, but find ways to create a believable, implied history." Up's details have an incredible tactile quality, from the jiggle of golden retriever Dug's glossy coat to the sweet earnesty of Russell's sewn-on scout badges. An early sequence shows Carl aging not through conventional tropes like seasons changing, but through a montage of his neckties as his wife lovingly draws up their knots. The texture and style of his ties change to reflect the decades, and the tie fibers are so closely rendered that you can almost feel their nubby weave. "We sent our shading art director … to the Fashion Institute to research fabric samples of different eras for the ties, even for Carl's suits, like the houndstooth," says Rivera.

The guiding principle is the same across all Pixar films: "Wonder and interest doesn't have to come out of pizzazz and spectacle and huge idea. … I always knew that the power came from the small, and not from the big," Wall-E director Andrew Stanton said earlier this year. "[Making Wall-E] got me thinking about, and this may sound commercial, but how good Spielberg was at making moments of the littlest things." That minor details drive major plot points doesn't happen without meticulous curation, especially in the opening, silent montages of both Wall-E and Up. "It's not letting any stone be unturned," Stanton said about Wall-E. "It wasn't a random choice to just pick this. It's a conversation, like, 'Why are we picking this, why are we using this object, why are we in this set?' And frankly, I know these are questions I know you're supposed to ask yourself as a filmmaker with any film, but there's something interesting about doing a film where—and I never see it as silent—dialogue is no longer one of the ingredients that's giving you information. All I could do is give you intention and emotion." As Up continues to remind us, sometimes that's all you need.

JU-ON: The Grudge VideoGame for Nintendo Wii

A movie-based “JU-ON: The Grudge” videogame is scheduled for release in October 2009 in North America by Xseed Games, and in Q4 2009 in PAL territories by Rising Star Games.

It’s a “haunted house simulator” / adventure developed by FeelPlus & AQ Interactive of Lost Odyssey (Xbox 360) and Blue Dragon Plus (DS) fame. Using the Wii Remote as a flashlight, JU-ON: The Grudge has players move forward with the touch of a button and explore haunted areas such as an abandoned warehouse, a dimly lit hospital and a mannequin factory.

With a story revolving around the unfortunate Yamada family, JU-ON: The Grudge features a new unique gameplay mechanic that measures your movements during play - the more you flinch and jump, the worse your success rate becomes. The player can progress through the game with bad scores, but it is those with a steady hand and nerves of steel that will have the most to gain from this experience. For example: while one player explores the game’s dingy environments using the Wii Remote as a flashlight, a friend can grab a second controller to trigger in-game scares.

“We are absolutely delighted to have secured JU-ON: The Grudge for a European release,” enthused Yen Hau, Rising Star Games’ product marketing assistant. “This is a renowned horror title not only in its native Japan but also in worldwide cinema. With [the film's director/writer Takashi] Shimizu-san also heavily involved in the creation process of the game [as a creative consultant], this is as close as you can get to an interactive horror movie and is perfectly suited to join the Rising Star Games family.”

“Ju-on: The Grudge makes quick scares accessible to anyone with a Wii,” said Xseed Games president Jun Iwasaki in a statement. “Players can even hand the Wii Remote to their mother and enjoy watching her play and get scared.”

It is said that when a person dies with a deep and burning grudge, a curse is born. When an average housewife in Nerima, Japan, was murdered in a grisly fashion, it gave rise to a curse so powerful that it threatens to kill at a pace thought unimaginable before.

The curse manifests on those who encounter the curse by any means, such as entering the house or being in contact with somebody who was already cursed. Once Erika Yamada is exposed to the curse while searching for her dog in an abandoned warehouse, the entire Yamada family is put in grave danger as soon as she reunites with them at home. They must now face their individual challenges alone, and only by overcoming the curse together will their family truly be free again.

New Study from the British Computer Society

It’s a truth universally acknowledged that the youth of today find technology quite boring – but a new study from the British Computer Society (BCS) has suggested the recession has changed some minds.

The study found that just one in five think IT is boring, while over half think the subject is exciting. Just over half (57 per cent) said IT leads to innovative people and business, while 39 per cent believe it is as important as law or medicine.

Financial considerations haven’t hurt, either. Over half of young people with IT qualifications are “upbeat” about their job prospects – despite the crashing economy – while those without IT skills are rather more pessimistic.

The poll of nearly a thousand 16 to 30 year olds showed well over half thought anyone without IT skills would struggle in a modern workplace, while nearly half think companies should help train their workers in IT business skills.

"Young people realise even basic IT skills are now essential to their long term employment prospects. They recognise that IT is a dynamic, global profession that offers a rewarding career equal to other traditional professions," said Jennifer Hewitt, from the BCS's Young Professionals Group, in a statement.

"While it's great that those with IT qualifications are optimistic, it's worrying for those without IT qualifications if they can't get the jobs or careers they want. BCS wants to see a skilled IT workforce and an IT-literate population, not a bigger digital divide," she said.

The study found the most popular IT-related fields were the web at 36 per cent, gaming at 33 per cent, and education at 25 per cent, followed by software development and network design.

Bletchley Park Disappointed by Government Snub

The government's conclusion that Bletchley Park, the home of WWII code breaking efforts, has received enough funding, has been met with disappointment by those fighting for the historic site’s survival.

Yesterday, the House of Lords’ Deputy Chief Whip, Lord Davies, rejected an appeal put forward by Baroness McIntosh, asking what additional financial support Bletchley Park would receive to ensure it is both restored and developed.

Despite being a site of key significance, both to the industry and the country as a whole, Bletchley Park is far from at its best. Campaigners have been tirelessly raising funds to move the site out of its previous state of disrepair. They’ve been successful thus far, but there is a danger the site will fall further into disrepair if it is not supported adequately going forward.

“The Bletchley Park Trust has indeed received significant investment into the infrastructure of the site for the enormous backlog of critical repairs and for this we are grateful to both English Heritage and Milton Keynes Council. These repairs are already well underway,” said Simon Greenish, chief executive of Bletchley Park Trust, in a statement.

“However, until these building works are completed over the next three years, it is the day-to-day operational costs associated with running this ageing and dilapidated site that the Trust battles to meet.”

Greenish confirmed that his team is working to secure Lottery funding to turn Bletchley Park into the “world-class education and heritage centre it deserves to be.”

“The Trust’s business plan is a solid one and establishes that once capital building works are complete and the museum has been developed, bringing in substantially more visitors, Bletchley Park will be self-supporting,” he added.

“Given the significant impact of Bletchley Park’s wartime work on the outcome of World War Two and the way we all live today, I am disappointed at the negative Government response to Baroness McIntosh’s appeal.”

Pope Warns of Political Misuse of Religion

AMMAN - Pope Benedict visited a mosque on Saturday in another attempt to mend fences with Islam after a 2006 speech caused offence, and urged Christians and Muslims to jointly defend religion from political manipulation.

Speaking at the modern King Hussein bin Talal Mosque in Amman, he struck a note of harmony and shared purpose between the world's two largest religions, continuing a main theme of his trip to the Middle East.

"I firmly believe Christians and Muslims can embrace (the task of cooperation) particularly through our respective contributions to learning and scholarship, and public service", he told Islamic leaders and diplomats at the mosque.

Addressing the pope, Prince Ghazi bin Muhammad bin Talal, reminded the pope of the "hurt" Muslims around the world felt in 2006 after Benedict quoted a Byzantine emperor who said Islam was irrational and violent.

Ghazi, a cousin of Jordanian King Abdullah, told the gathering the Muslim world "appreciated" the Vatican's clarification and accepted that the pope was not expressing his own opinion at the time but making an historical citation.

Ghazi, a leading figure in the "Common Word" group of Muslim scholars promoting dialogue with Christians, praised the pope for his "friendly gestures and kindly actions toward Muslims" since the 2006 speech prompted outrage.

Terra Bajraghosa, 5 May - 10 June 2009 at Cemeti Art House

In commenting briefly on the creative process behind Terra Bajraghosa’s works, the impression that arises is the domination of a new “technological utopia” with computers and all of the other descendents of communication technology. The generation of the twentieth century generation cannot easily avoid the inevitability of radical change that is made possible by all of these new aspects of the communications media.

The “luxury” of the new century that simplifies patterns of consumption and industry, for example, has raised capitalism to dominate mass culture through television and film. Pixels have now become the basic formulations for mass culture!

Similarly, in discussing art, by returning to peek at a perspective of art through the works of Terra Bajraghosa, it is as if we must restructure the pixel fragments. Miniscule debris become the giant megalomania of this century. Art, with its romanticism, as in painting, sculpture, drawing, and installations, is an ambiguous media, although there is certainly not much more that we can bring forward. At most, the images have been transformed into presentable forms: painting, sculpture, where the underlying spirit is pixel art.

Is it true that the changes of the times that have been stimulated by industry and technology have indeed been as radical and inevitable as this? Terra’s works produced in 2008 through 2009, which will be exhibited at Cemeti Art House from May through June 2009, touch on the direction of this change with sharp humor and intelligence. At a glance, a careful observer can still be inebriated with the statues, paintings, animation, and interactive installations a la Terra Bajraghosa. One series of “paintings” that adopts the style of the works of the master of modern painting, Raden Saleh Sjarief Bustaman, is “Penangkapan Diponegoro” (“Capture of Diponegoro”) and “Berburu Rusa” (“Deer Hunting”); and Delacroix : "Liberty Lead The People". This series of paintings unveils and simplifies the forms, colors and lighting into millions of pixel fragments, by taking all of the artists’ skills that are adept at painting and rearranging the fragments, like children’s lego blocks, into a “painting”.

Terra also creates an interactive installation, in which the visitors and audience are invited to re-identify themselves in their own self-portraits through a simplification of pixel art.

Terra Bajraghosa, born in Yogyakarta, is active as an artist and teacher since finishing a degree in art education in Visual Communication Design at ISI Yogyakarta in 2005.
